Calming Signals

Dogs communicate using signals.  Some of the signals are used to calm other dogs. These are called calming signals.

     Some examples of these are:
  • Licking
  • Turning away/turning of the head
  • Sniffing around
  • Walking slowly
  • Freezing
  • Wagging the tail
  • Play bowing
For your sake and the dogs, it is crucial that you learn to recognize your dogs this body language.

How To Keep Your Dog Out Of A Room

A very common issue that people are having is keeping the dog  out of certain areas in the house.  Here is a very simple way to let your dog know where it is and where it isn't allowed to go.

You should have a very obvious line for your dog, such as a change from carpet to wood.  If there is no clear line then you need to make one using tape. Encourage the dog to cross the line. When he does cross the line gently drive him out of the room. Praise the dog when he is out of the room. Be careful not to give him treats every time as he will come to expect it.

Using this calm consistent method and little time your dog to get the message and understand which side of the line that he is allowed on.

As with any training it will have maximum effect only if your dog listens to you because you are the pack leader; and you have already implemented the five golden rules. Hopefully this will give a better idea of how to communicate your commands to your dog and how willing they are to listen to you when you have their respect.
